Job Purpose

To provide high-quality, person-centred care and support to clients in their own homes, enabling them to maintain their independence and dignity. The Healthcare Assistant will deliver personal care, support daily living activities, and promote wellbeing whilst adhering to individual care plans and company policies.

Key Responsibilities

1. Personal Care & Support

  • Provide personal care including washing, dressing, toileting, and mobility assistance whilst maintaining client dignity and privacy.

  • Support clients with medication administration following prescribed guidelines and completing MAR charts accurately.

  • Assist with nutritional needs including meal preparation, feeding support, and monitoring fluid intake.

  • Support clients with continence management and the use of appropriate aids and equipment.


2. Daily Living Support

  • Assist clients with domestic tasks such as light housework, laundry, and maintaining a clean, safe environment.

  • Support shopping, social activities, and appointments to promote independence and community engagement.

  • Provide companionship and emotional support, promoting mental wellbeing and social interaction.

  • Encourage and support clients to maintain existing skills and develop new ones where appropriate.


3. Health Monitoring & Observations

  • Monitor and report changes in clients' physical, mental, or emotional wellbeing to supervisors.

  • Take and record vital signs including temperature, pulse, and blood pressure when trained and required.

  • Observe and report any concerns regarding client safety, health deterioration, or safeguarding issues.

  • Support clients with moving and handling using appropriate techniques and equipment.


4. Documentation & Record Keeping

  • Complete daily care records accurately and in a timely manner, documenting all care provided.

  • Maintain confidential client records and ensure information is shared appropriately with relevant staff.

  • Report incidents, accidents, and concerns promptly using appropriate channels and documentation.

  • Participate in care plan reviews and contribute observations about client needs and preferences.


5. Communication & Teamwork

  • Communicate effectively with clients, families, and healthcare professionals in a respectful and professional manner.

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure continuity of care and consistent service delivery.

  • Attend team meetings, handovers, and training sessions as required.

  • Escalate concerns or queries to supervisors promptly and appropriately.


6. Health, Safety & Infection Control

  • Follow health and safety procedures and risk assessments to ensure safe working practices.

  • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly and maintain good infection control standards.

  • Report hazards, accidents, and near misses in accordance with company policies.

  • Maintain professional boundaries and ensure safeguarding principles are upheld at all times.


7. Professional Development

  • Participate in mandatory training and continuous professional development opportunities.

  • Work towards achieving relevant qualifications and maintaining competency standards.

  • Reflect on practice and seek support or guidance when needed.

  • Maintain professional registration and adhere to codes of conduct where applicable.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Care Certificate or equivalent qualification (or willingness to complete within probationary period)

  • Experience in a care environment or relevant life experience demonstrating caring skills

  • Basic understanding of health and safety principles in care settings

  • Ability to work with vulnerable adults whilst maintaining appropriate professional boundaries


Skills & Competencies

  • Good communication skills with the ability to build rapport with clients and families

  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills for accurate record-keeping

  • Ability to follow care plans and instructions precisely

  • Physical capability to perform personal care tasks and moving and handling

  • Reliability, punctuality, and good time management

  • Basic IT skills for electronic care management systems

Additional Requirements

  • Enhanced DBS check (or equivalent, depending on country)

  • Flexibility to work various shifts including evenings, weekends, and bank holidays

  • Reliable transport to travel between client visits (public transport acceptable in some areas)
